To know
Geographical notes
On the Julian coast, the town boasts two castles: one in ruins on a rock surrounded by the sea, the other overlooking the sea on a cliff. The town is part of the scattered municipality of Duino-Aurisina.
How to orient yourself
The small historic center, gathered around the castle and point of arrival of the Rilke trail, has a semicircular structure, crossed by alleys and a main street called ulca (ie street in the Slovenian dialect of the place). The center was in ancient times protected by walls that are still partially visible today. There is the Church of the Holy Spirit of 1591, located near the walls of the castle which was once part of a monastery of the Servites.
Over time the town has developed along the lines towards Trieste and Friuli, and towards the sea with the town of Duino Mare, now linked seamlessly with the historic center.

- 2 Mithraeum. The Mitreo di Duino is a natural cavity where the cult of the god Mithras was practiced, widespread in the Roman world from the end of the 1st century until the triumph of Christianity.
- The cave is located a few hundred meters from the Bocche del Timavo in Friuli-Venezia Giulia north-north-west of Duino. In the center of the cave there are two counters and an altar made from a roughly squared block of limestone. On the back wall there is a votive plaque representing the god Mithras killing the bull. Many offerings were found in the cave: about 400 coins, oil lamps and a large number of jars.
- 3 Duino Cliffs Regional Nature Reserve, @[email protected]. The area of the reserve, established in 1996, extends for 107 hectares and covers a stretch of the steep limestone coast located in the municipal area of Duino Aurisina and the corresponding stretch of sea. This karst area has the particularity of being the meeting point of two habitats, the Central-European Illyrian-Balkan and the Mediterranean.
- Here, animal and plant species from both territories coexist, giving this karst reserve a high degree of biodiversity; in the Duino cliffs there is (the only place in the world) the Centaurea kartschiana, a plant that lives in the cliffs closest to the sea. The landscape is very interesting, characterized by the white limestone rock formations they show grooves, towers and erosions resulting from the well-known karst phenomena.
- 4 Rilke trail. The path develops between the castle of Duino and the bay of Sistiana. It runs on the rocks of the coast, inside the Nature Reserve, and runs along the remains of military posts, also offering a vast horizon that sweeps across the Gulf of Trieste and embraces the area between the mouth of the Isonzo and Punta Salvore in Croatia.
