A weekend in Mannheim - Ein Wochenende in Mannheim

This article describes a weekend in Mannheim. On a weekend you get a good impression of the city, which is only possible on the second Blick scores. You also get something of the intercultural flair of Mannheim.

General information

The budget is around € 80 p.p. Without food and hotel, if you take up all the suggestions. This route is based on the assumption that you start at a hotel close to the city center near the main train station.

If a deviation is made from the main route, the text is set in italics.

mobility

The city center of Mannheim, what the Mannheimer calls squares, can be easily explored on foot, for more distant destinations you can use the well-developed Bus and train network To fall back on. Alternatively, you can also for short distances E-scooter or Cycles rent.

Daily plans

Friday

The city of squares

Upon arrival, stroll through the squares (hence the nickname Quadreat City), i.e. through the city center, which is located between the castle, Neckar, Jungbusch and the water tower. The goal is Marketplace. With it you "walk through" one of the special features of the city, the square street pattern of the streets. There are no street names, each square is made up of a letter and a number. Then there is the house number, e.g. B5, 10. The Turkish quarter "Little Istanbul" begins at the market square. If you are hungry, there are plenty of options here to satisfy it. Either at one of the Turkish restaurants on the market square or you walk through the G-squares (this is the street in the direction of Jungbusch) and choose a snack of your choice there.

This street then also leads to the trendy district of Mannheim, the Jungbusch. Here you can end the evening in one of the many bars. Or enjoy the atmosphere on the Jungbuschpromenade with a glass of beer or wine on a summer evening.

Alternatively, you can visit an ice hockey game at the Adler Mannheim (in the train station you can see in large letters: ice hockey city Mannheim).

Saturday

On Saturday, we will explore the city center and the Lindenhof. The starting point is the water tower, which is a 10-minute walk from the train station. Alternatively, you can go to the bus stop Water tower drive.

The water tower
  • Mannheim's landmark: the Water tower. It is surrounded by Friedrichsplatz with a beautiful park, water features and a beautiful Art Nouveau ensemble (which is a rarity in Mannheim because of the war damage). The tower itself cannot be visited.
  • The is right across the street Art Gallerythat doesn’t have to hide from major art museums in Germany. Both the permanent exhibition and the changing exhibitions are recommended.
  • This is an alternative for those interested in technology and also more child-friendly Technoseum.

If you want to take a break from eating, go to the squares through the Fressgasse, which lives up to its name. Everyone else goes through the art street. It goes over the Kapuzinerplanken and then at the Paradeplatz to the left through the Kurpfalzstraße. Then turn right into the A-squares and walk to

  • most important church in Mannheim, the Jesuit Church. A visit is worth it.
  • From there you cross Bismarckstraße and you are on lock. Most of the castle is occupied by the university, but part of the historically reconstructed rooms (the castle was badly damaged in World War II) can be visited.
  • Alternative: Murals, large-scale works of art, have been painted on house walls since 2013. Many of these can be found in the E, F, and G squares. More information can be found at Mannheim / street art. Then you come through the Friedrichspark, under the Hochstraße (here, too, there is always new graffiti on the pillars) back on the route to the palace garden.

Now it goes through the castle garden to the Rhine (follow signs for Lindenhof, you will be led through an underpass under the tracks). On the Rhine promenade in the district Lindenhof the common man from Mannheim goes for a walk on Sundays. If you can take a coffee, visit it on the way Café Meerwiesen. If you are not averse to ice cream, that's it ShowEISt warmly recommended.

We continue up the Rhine. Depending on your desire and fitness, you can head for several destinations:

The Rhine promenade as seen from Ludwigshafen

One of the most beautiful beer gardens in Mannheim is recommended for dinner, tarragon, or that Purino directly at the lido.

  • Anyone who is not averse to a little culture can attend a performance of the National Theater. At this traditional house you can watch drama, opera and dance theater.

Sunday

The day starts with a good breakfast. The starting point is the Neckarstadt West and here the old fire station on the side of the Neckar facing away from the city center. There are some nice cafés in Mannheim's newest trendy district, the following are particularly recommended:

  • Small cafe (A reservation is recommended here).
  • Café peacock (You cannot make a reservation here, but if you arrive at 9.30 or before, you can usually find space).

Well strengthened, it is now through one of the most beautiful streets in Mannheim, through Max-Joseph Strasse. There are still many beautiful Art Nouveau buildings to see here.

If you want to see more murals, take a detour (Mittelstrasse 10, Waldhofstrasse 56, Zehntstrasse 1). For details see urban street art Mannheim

There are now three options for organizing the day:

The Luisenpark
  • A visit to the Luisenpark
    • You can wonderfully spend several hours in the largest park in Mannheim. Gastronomy is available. Particularly suitable for children (petting zoo, penguins, playgrounds, large meadows).
  • Walk on the Neckar
    • From the old fire station you start a walk up the Neckar towards the telecommunications tower. You can walk on both sides, but the slightly nicer bank is on the inner city side. You walk past the largest building complex in Mannheim, the university hospital. In both cases there is a nice river landscape with a view of the Odenwald. If you have taken the side of the university hospital, you cross the Neckar on the railway and pedestrian bridge in Neuostheim. The destination is the Café Agata in Neuostheim in an industrial area.
  • Visit of the rem - Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums
    • There are changing exhibitions here, it is best to check the website.
View from the telecommunications tower

In the early evening you can end the day in the telecommunications tower (the entrance is outside the Luisenpark). You can combine the beautiful view and a delicious meal in the revolving restaurant. If you are afraid of heights, stroll through the villa district East town and eats in the Schwetzingerstadt, for example in Café cult or in the restaurant Little Saigon.

It is about a 15-minute walk to the main train station from both restaurants. The weekend in Mannheim ends here and you got to know the city of squares a little better.
