Ergersheim is a French commune located in the Bas-Rhin in Alsace. The wine-growing village has about 1,045 inhabitants.

Understand

History

The site has been occupied since the Merovingian period, as evidenced by some discoveries made south of the current cemetery. In his donation of vines and land in favor of the church of Saint-Thomas in Strasbourg around 920, Bishop Richwin (913-933) mentions the locality then called "Argeresheim marca". Several other religious institutions have property in the village, where a leper colony is attested in 1387, in a charter for the benefit of the collegiate church of Haslach. As a former episcopal possession, Ergersheim was particularly affected during the Bishops' War. An estimate of the damage drawn up in 1593 by the bailiff of Dachstein lists the destruction of 63 houses, 46 barns, 37 presses and 161 stables. In 1662, the village was again looted and the houses set on fire. Following these events, the finages of the disappeared localities of Altbronn and Rimlenheim are incorporated into the communal ban. Located on the left bank of the Bruche canal, the village is part of Ackerland, but its vineyard and its type of dwelling give it the characteristics of the municipalities of the Molsheim vineyard.

  • Church of Our Lady of Altbronn  – The name comes from the village of Altbronn which was once located between Ergersheim and Dahlenheim. Altbronn was devastated at the end of the XIVe or at the start of XVe century, and its ban is assimilated to that of Ergersheim in 1664. The Chapel, a former place of pilgrimage to the Virgin, depends on the church of Dachstein. The single nave, pierced with large bay windows, dates from medieval times, while the bell tower was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century.e century. The small choir of the church hardly contains this baroque-style high altar. The central niche houses a 15th century wooden Madonna and Childe century oddly dressed in an 18th century coate century. At the end of the XIVe century, this church was elevated to the rank of pilgrimage by the will of the Bishop of Strasbourg. This event is recorded on a sealed slab on the south side of the building. In Gothic characters, the inscription announces: "In the year 1397, this chapel was restored by Bishop Guillaume de Diest in honor of the Virgin, thanks to alms given by all.". She is accompanied by a prayer to Mary so that the most humble can return to heaven with her. The high altar dates from the beginning of the 18th centurye century. The small choir of the church hardly contains this baroque-style high altar. The central niche houses a wooden Madonna and Child, seated and curiously covered with an 18th century mantle.e century.
  • Source Sainte-Anne  – A few steps from the pilgrimage there is a small aedicule which houses a spring. This is the fountain that is the origin of the birth of the village of Altbronn, whose name means old fountain. The miracles recorded by the Jesuits at the end of XVIe century speak of the virtues of the water of the “Annabrünnlein”, the Source Sainte-Anne. In particular, they were women who, in view of difficult childbirth, came to ask the Blessed Virgin for help.
  • Saint-Michel chapel  – This chapel is the only witness to the disappeared village of Rimlenheim. Mentioned in 884, the hamlet was destroyed by the Armagnacs in 1444 and only five houses remain at the beginning of the XVIIe century century. The chapel was once adorned with an altarpiece from 1741, to the glory of the Virgin, made by the sculptor Ostermeyer, from Soultz-les-Bains. A mass in memory of the missing inhabitants is celebrated in this chapel on September 29, St. Michael's Day.
  • St. Nicholas Church  – The parish church is made up of a single nave and a polygonal choir. The side bell tower, the lower part of which dates back to medieval times, ends with a last octagonal level topped with a bulb roof. The main facade has a neo-Romanesque portal from 1873. Inside there is baroque furniture, such as: the pulpit and side altars with columns, statues and cherubs.
  • Convent of the Trappistines  – Coming from Italy, the Simonis family settled in Wolxheim and Ergersheim. She will grow rich and will build, in 1826, a residence called "the Castle". Several members of this family distinguished themselves in the ranks of the clergy and devoted themselves to charitable and social works. In 1895, the Simonis castle was ceded to the Cistercians of Oelenberg, who transformed it and added a church and convent buildings to install a Trappistine convent. It was later called “Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Altbronn”. . The building was bought by the town hall.
  • Old laundry  – Along the Bruche canal is a group of buildings known as “Bleiche” (bleached) which designates this place dedicated to the bleaching of unbleached sheets which are then dried on the surrounding meadows. The square tower, now private property, is often considered a medieval building, its shape reminiscent of a dungeon.
  • Lock keeper  – On the towpath, along the Bruche canal, are some old lock keepers' houses. That of Ergersheim has a mansard roof, and its pavilion is extended to the east by a single-storey wing, parallel to the lock of the canal.
