Espirutu Santo is the largest of the islands Vanuatu and it also boasts the highest peak of the group, Mount Tabwemasana of 1,877 meters. Its beaches have remained untouched and its interior is still covered in dense jungle.

Urban centers

  • Luganville - Major center of Espiritu Santo and second urban center of the Vanuatu after capital, Luganville is the capital of Sanma, one of the six administrative provinces into which the country. The city stretches out on the Segond canal which separates it from the small island of Aore and offers a safe haven from cyclones. It was built entirely by the US Army during World War II who provided it with the necessary infrastructure in their war effort against the Japan. Today Luganville houses communities of Chinese is Vietnamese but it has retained the Far West village imprint that they impressed on it Americans. Luganville offers good opportunities for divers. At the bottom of the Segond canal lies the wreck of the "SS President Coolidge", a luxurious ocean liner converted into a warship in 1941 and sank a year later hit by mines that protected the entrance to the canal.

Oriental Coast

  • Hog Harbor - The island's second largest center, Hog Harbor lies on the east coast near a magnificent beach, Champagne Beach.
  • Port Orly - At the end of the road that gives Luganville runs parallel to the east coast passing through Hog Harbor, Port Orly is a village with a beautiful beach protected by an islet that can be reached on foot at low tide.

Northern coast

  • Matantas - Village on the Big Bay, the vast gulf that opens onto the northern coast of Espiritu Santo. Matantas is the base for visiting the Vatthe reserve, established to protect a strip of rainforest

  • Loru Protected Area - Established to protect a forest, it can be visited with the help of local guides.

The east coast is bordered by a road that begins in Luganville. It is paved only in its initial section (10 km). Here are the notable things along the eastern side: Loru Protected Area, Hog Harbor is Port Orly.
