Geographical notes
The region is hilly, unlike the other regions of the country they are flat. The highest peak in Estonia is located here and is Suur Munamägi which is just over 300m.
Territories and tourist destinations
Urban centers
- 1 Otepää - About fifty km south of Tartu, the village of Otepää it is at the center of a wooded region dotted with small lakes that is suitable for excursions on foot or by bicycle but also by boat. Dense forests and lakes are also present in the Haanja region, wedged between Russia is Latvia. Its main center is Võru on the shores of Lake Tamula. Includes a ski resort specializing in Nordic skiing.
- 2 Tartu - Second largest city in the country in terms of population. It stands on the banks of the Emajõgi River and is home to an ancient and prestigious university.
- 3 Valga - City that rises close to the border between Estonia is Latvia.
- 4 Viljandi - 80 km east of Tartu, Viljandi is a pretty village on the shores of the lake of the same name and a base for excursions to the Soomaa national park, a wooded area interspersed with lakes and marshes. It stands along the banks of the Valouja River with the ruins of a castle. The town is also renowned for its annual folklore festival.
- 5 Võru - City located in a hilly area on the shores of Lake Tamula.
Other destinations
- 1 Karula National Park - Characterized by its hilly topography, with its widespread ponds, great biodiversity and a traditional, characteristic Estonian cultural landscape.
- 2 Soomaa National Park - Specialized in the care and protection of the Estonian natural, landscape and historical cultural heritage of the areas with ponds, lakes, and lake areas in the central area of Estonia.
- 3 Suur Munamägi (Mount of the Big Egg) - Located about 15 km south of Võru. A hill that with its 318 m of height constitutes the highest altitude of the Baltic countries. Its peak, covered with trees, easily goes unnoticed.

It is possible to arrive by train from Tallinn to almost all cities in southern Estonia.

On the train
There is a well developed rail link for practically the entire region, except for the Võrumaa county.
By bus
In large cities there are city bus lines. There are also buses to reach all corners of the region.
