Euboea (Gr. Εύβοια), spoken Évia, is after Crete the second biggest greek Island and lies in the Aegean.
Regions
Evia is an island about 175 km long, it is only separated from the east coast of mainland Greece by the Gulf of Evia. In the island's capital Chalkida, this gulf is only 40 m wide at its narrowest point, here a bridge connects the island with the mainland. There is a second bridge just a few kilometers further south.
The island of Evia forms the majority of the regional district of the same name in the region Central Greece, the island also belongs to this Skyros, some other smaller islands and a smaller area on the mainland opposite the island's capital Chalkida.
places
The island can be divided into three regions
- Northern New ZealandMost of the Greeks live here who fled Asia Minor in 1922 and settled here.
- 1 Aidipsos (Αιδηψός Εύβοιας). the health resort was known as "Herakles' bath" in ancient times, and Aristotle and Plutarch bathed in the hot springs.

- 3 Artemision (Αρτεμίσιο Εύβοιας). Site of a sea battle in antiquity, location of well-known ancient bronze figures.
Central Uea
- 5 Eretria (Ερέτρια). New foundation on historical ground. Interesting remains of the ancient city on the outskirts.
- 6 Dirfys (δημοτική ενότητα Διρφύων Εύβοιας). above the village is the 1745 m high mountain Dirphys, the highest mountain on the island.
South Uea
- 7 Styra (Στύρα Εύβοιας). touristic city.

Other goals
background
The island is visited very much by Greeks from Athens as a holiday destination, less by foreign tourists. The countryside, beaches and hot springs are the main attractions.
language
getting there
There is no airport on the island of Evia. The Athens airport is about 100 km from Chalkida, but there is a good road connection.
There are also several year-round ferry connections, for example:
- Rafina - Marmari,
- Agia Marina - Styri
- Oropos - Eretria
mobility
Since the island is quite large, it is advisable to take a rental car to be able to visit the beautiful, more remote beaches. Since it extends around 175 km north-south, you can quickly reach the limits of what is possible with rental scooters.
