Toponymy

Toponymists are based on the oldest form of the name attested from VIIe century in the form Figiacus and see in it a Gallo-Roman toponymic type in -acum, localizing suffix and property of Gallic origin -acon (Celtic * -āko) which generally resulted in -ac in the Occitan linguistic domain, sometimes at -at (Auvergne, Limousin). It is preceded by the anthroponym Gallo-Roman Fidius Where * Fibius, possible variation of Fabius, which we would find in Fiac (Tarn) and Fyé (Yonne). In Occitan, the city is called Fitsat and is written Fijac.

The "Toponymy" section is taken from the French Wikipedia article entitled "Figeac » (see the list of authors).
