The Guayaquil Airport, officially Aeroportuaria de Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo is the second largest airport of Ecuador and one of the most modern in South America. It is only about five kilometers north of the center and therefore still in the settlement area of Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador by population.
background
Until 2006, the airport, like several other airports in South America, was behind Simón Bolívar named. When the new terminal was inaugurated at that time, the airport was given its current name after the Guayaquil-born lawyer, writer, politician and president of the country José Joaquin de Olmedo. The old terminal was converted into an exhibition center.
The modern airport has received multiple awards from the Airports Council International (ACI) as part of the "Airport Service Quality" program (see Lan newsletter),
The airport is 5 meters above sea level and has a runway 2,790 meters long (9,150 ft) and 46 m wide. This allows larger aircraft such as the Airbus A340 to land.
Also because of the location of the airport with the danger from the approach lane over the urban area of the city, a completely new airport for Guayaquil is already planned in the medium term.
