Terminals

On the landside, Zurich Airport consists of three departure and check-in areas (1, 2 and 3) and two arrival areas (1 and 2). Check-in area 3 is located directly above the airport train station in the Airport Center building and is available to travelers from the Lufthansa Group (Swiss, Lufthansa, Germanwings, Eurowings). Lufthansa Group travelers are handled in check-in area 1 in the main terminal building (above arrival area 1), while all other airlines are handled in the recently renovated check-in area 2 (above arrival 2). The transition to the airside security area (see below) takes place via a centralized boarding pass and security control between check-in areas 1 and 2.

On the airside, the airport is divided into four departure areas. In departure area A (to the right of the security check), only flights within the Schengen area are handled. Departure area B (to the left of the security check) also serves as a departure area for Schengen flights, while departure area D on the floor below, which serves the same gates, is primarily used for handling short-haul flights outside the Schengen area (before changing to passport control takes place on the lower floor), but isolated long-haul flights are also processed here. Departure area E is located in the satellite terminal on the other side of runway 10/28 and can be reached via an automated, underground gondola lift. Only flights to destinations outside the Schengen area are handled here, including almost all long-haul Swiss connections. Passengers in First Class with the local airline Swiss also have the option of being driven from the First Class Lounge near departure area A in a limousine through a road tunnel to the satellite terminal.

The left of the two lanes is open to general traffic, the right of the lanes is reserved for limousine services, taxis and hotel shuttles. On the departure level, a parking ticket is to be drawn at the entrance to the barrier, which allows 5 minutes free stay in the short-term parking area. A comparatively high price of CHF 1 has to be paid for every additional minute. Since the renovated driveways were reopened, free entry is no longer possible on the arrivals level; In any case, a parking ticket has to be purchased for at least 15 minutes.

Practical advice

Zurich Airport regularly wins awards for its good guidance and signage. Orientation and navigation through the building is therefore comparatively easy. Those who rarely travel should still plan enough time. The staff at the airport speaks at least German and English, and very often French.

The security check takes place on a total of 4 levels in the area between the main terminal and the so-called "Airside Center" (the area of the main terminal that is only accessible to passengers). Passengers who follow the signs from check-in area 1 to the departures are directed to level 2 of the security controls and enter the Airside Center on the departures level. Passengers walking from check-in areas 2 and 3 as well as from the airport train station in the direction of departure are processed on level 3 and enter the Airside Center on the gallery above the departure area. Levels 1 and 4 are only open at peak times.

In the "Aiport Center" building above the airport train station, you will also find luggage storage on the upper level (transition to the main terminal / check-in area 2). There are also SBB luggage lockers right next to check-in area 3, behind the exits to platform 3/4.

There are lost property offices, border police offices, at the airport Emergency passport office, a rectory and other facilities that can help in various emergencies.

Above Check-in 3, right next to the food court, the Swiss Post operates a branch that is open seven days a week. Outside of the counter opening hours, only the Postomat is accessible. In addition, the three large telecommunications providers Orange, Sunrise and Swisscom are represented with their own stores. Telephone booths still exist, even if these have become much rarer due to the rapid increase in the use of mobile phones.

It is worth mentioning that Migros supermarket, which is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and sells all standard products of a supermarket at the same, favorable conditions as in the rest of the country.

It should be noted that the shopping options in the main terminal, both in the public area and in the security area, are kept within narrow limits.
