Panorama of the bridge connecting Frankfurt with the neighboring Polish city Słubice

Frankfurt on the Oder - a city with poviat rights, situated on the western bank of the Oder, in the eastern part German in the federal state Brandenburg. It lies on the border with Poland and is connected by a bridge to the Polish sister city Słubice. The city is sometimes confused with the much larger and more famous city Frankfurt am Main.

Characteristic

Drive

100 km east of Berlin and 470 km west of Warsaw.

1 Railway station. Regional express trains run from Berlin every hour and the journey takes just over an hour to Frankfurt. There is also a EuroCity (EC) train that goes from Berlin via Frankfurt on its way to Poland, but it is much more expensive than a commuter train.

By car

Frankfurt (Oder) is located on the motorway connecting Berlin and Warsaw.

By bus

Communication

There is a local bus as well as a tram system but the city is not that big so it's easy to walk everywhere.

Worth seeing

  • 1 Marienkirche. famous for its medieval window depicting the life of Antichrist. The only known account of the story of the Antichrist from the Bible. It is on display at the Rathaus (town hall) but should soon be on display at the church. The renovation director of this church, Hans-Dieter Laube, tells a fascinating story about the window and the history of the city in general, however he only speaks German so this could be a problem but if you know the language then it's worth stopping by and talking to him.

Tourist information

Frankfurt has potentially a lot to offer over a day visit, although you do need to speak German to benefit. Considering the city was very deep in the former East Germany, the number of English-speaking people is limited.
