Freiensteinau is an amalgamation of 12 villages in the southern Vogelsberg. In addition to the main town of Freiensteinau, these are Fleschenbach, Gunzenau, Wood mill, Nieder-Moos, Ober-Moos, Radmühl, the other Radmühl (For centuries, Radmühl was divided into two halves by the Prussian-Hesse state border and therefore the two halves of Radmühl now form two separate districts), Richless, Reinhards, Weidenau and salt.

- 1 Freiensteinau Castle, Am Kirchberg 4. Freiensteinau Castle was the seat of the Barons Riedesel zu Eisenbach, who owned extensive property in the region. In 1975 the castle fell to the municipality of Freiensteinau, it is mostly empty. Parts can be viewed in consultation with the NABU local group Freiensteinau.
