Futuna is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean belonging to the territory French of Wallis and Futuna.
To know
Futuna is part of the Hoorn Islands (Îles Horne), near the island of Alofi, among the others. They are both remnants of an ancient and extinct volcano now surrounded by a coral reef.
The island takes its name from an endonym derived from the local term futu, that is, fish poison plant.
Geographical notes
The highest point of the island is Mount Singavi which reaches 765 m.
Background
Futuna and Alofi were discovered in 1616 by Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire during their famous world tour with the ship Eendracht.
The island is famous as the place (where the cathedral of Poi is now located) where Pierre Chanel was martyred in 1841 becoming the first and only Catholic saint of the Polynesia.
