background

Before the arrival of the European settlers, there was a Seneca Indian village on the site of today's city of Geneva, which was called "Canada Saga". During the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, the British expanded the place into a military base. The settlement was then abandoned and destroyed by the Sullivan expedition in 1779.

As part of the land purchases of the Pulteney Association, the place was repopulated by Europeans around 1793. The foundation of the took place in several steps since 1806 Town of Geneva, which got its name in honor of the Swiss city of Geneva. According to another interpretation, the name is a corruption of the word "Seneca". Geneva later received the rank of one City.

Around 1825 Geneva received through the Cayuga-Seneca Canal Connection to the Erie Canal, which is extremely important for the region's economic development.
