Seneca Falls is a small town in the Finger Lakes Region of USFederal state new York. The Village of Seneca Falls lies within the sprawling Town of Seneca Falls.

The region, which was originally settled by Cayuga Indians, was visited by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century. In 1779 the Sullivan expedition followed, which caused a bloodbath among the Indians.

European settlement began around 1787 with the establishment of a village called Mynderse Mills. Than today Village of Seneca Falls Officially established in 1831, it was named after a series of smaller waterfalls and rapids of the Seneca River. The falls were used for power generation and by the mid-19th century, Seneca Falls was the third largest flour mill site in the world (after Rochester and Oswego) ascended. However, when the Seneca River was made navigable in 1915, the waterfalls fell victim to the canal construction work.

Seneca Falls also gained fame in the 19th century through the women's rights movement. The reformer Amelia Bloomer (1818-1894) lived here, and in 1848 Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) organized the first American conference on women's rights in Seneca Falls.
