George Town is the capital of malaysian State Penang.

background

In 1786 British traders settled on the island of Penang and named their settlement after the then ruler George III. Numerous well-preserved buildings from the time of British rule can still be found in the cityscape. Hindu and Buddhist temples, mosques and Christian churches, residential buildings by Malays, Europeans, Indians and Chinese bear witness to the city's multicultural heritage. The historic city center was therefore in 2008 together with the old town of Malacca to the UNESCO world cultural heritage explained.

For the Chinese New Year celebrations, deafening firework garlands, the traditional lion dance and an artful dragon dance performance are held in the hotel lobby.

A special feature is the in-house restaurant Sarkies, named after the Armenian founders of the hotel. Aside from international and local street food, it offers an unobstructed view of the Strait of Malacca, with its cargo and cruise ships in the roadstead, under fashionable fans and on tiled floor tiles, which conjure up an incomparable atmosphere at dusk.

The historic west wing of the hotel will be closed for renovation work from March 2019. It is to be modernized before Christmas 2019, but reopened in the old charm ambience.
