Giżycko(German: Soldering) is a polish City in the historical Masuria in the center of the Great Masurian Lakes on the Masurian Lake District.

background

Next Węgorzewo and Mikołajki Giżycko has developed into a center of water sports. Sailors and now also houseboat drivers feel in good hands in the beautiful, well-kept city, which constantly offers a series of events. In addition to good hotels and restaurants, good supermarkets such as Biedronka or Lidl also offer their services. A number of international houseboat providers are based in the surrounding ports. With the construction of the EkoMarinas the disposal (pump out) of the sewage tanks of the boats has also been solved, not a single drop of sewage gets into the clean waters. Environmental protection was given top priority.

Giżycko is an important tourist center. The city is picturesquely situated on the isthmus between the Wall- and the Löwentinsee(Jezioro Niegocin). This is where the sailors meet in summer and ice sailors in winter, when the lakes are sufficiently frozen. The range of accommodation, shopping and leisure opportunities is very good for tourists here. Nearby is the Boyen Fortress, built in the mid-19th century. Boat trips lead from here to Sztynort / Steinort, where the remains of the castle of the Lehndorff family can be viewed. Lötzen and Nikolaiken are centers of boat tourism.

  • 1  Boyen fortress. In the middle of the 19th century, built between the Löwentin and Kissain lakes on the Lötzen Canal to better fortify the city of Lötzen and to protect the German state from dangers from the east. Attempts at great power by Prussia and Russia also played a role, especially since they had gained experience in the Napoleonic Wars. The fortress was built entirely from bricks. In 1914 it survived a Russian siege and in World War II it was surrendered without a fight. The 2.3 km long wall covers an area of almost 100 hectares. It is a beautiful demonstration of Prusian fortification architecture.
  • 2  Swing bridge. Built on the Lötzen Canal in 1889 to enable road traffic between the city of Lötzen and the Boyen fortress. The bridge itself is 20 meters long and 8 meters wide and weighs around 100 tons. In order to allow the passage for the ships, the bridge is rotated and this can be done by a single person due to the ingenious construction. It takes about 5 minutes to open. The bridge construction is likely to be unique in the world and is a listed building. It is still used today for road traffic.
  • Castle of the Teutonic Order. Built in the second half of the 14th century. By the Teutonic Order. It was sacked by Lithuanians and then rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Dismantled in the 19th century except for the residential wing that served as the seat of the commandant of the Boyen Fortress. During the First Werl War, this was also where General Paul von Hindenburg's quarters were located. In 2011 the castle was converted into a hotel and is now operated by the Zamek hotel group. The entire location on the Lötzen Canal is very attractive and is lined with marinas, parks and promenade.
  • 3  Water tower. Water tower, built at the beginning of the 20th century, open to visitors since 2007. There is an elevator.
  • 4  St. Anne Church. Built in the late 19th century.
  • Ekomarina (MOSIR). The city of Lötzen has built a huge marina here. In addition to many berths, there are all imaginable facilities and service options, including a pump out for holding tanks. A very good restaurant also offers a wonderful view of the lake. A huge bridge was built over the entire marina, which also crosses the railway and the road, is equipped with lifts and can be used as a viewing terrace.
