But not even 100 years later the Romans came under Lukullus and he gave the city its old name again. The Romans discovered the cherry, which they named, derived from the Latin Cerasus Cerasium. Based on Lukullus' instructions, it was exported to Central Europe for the first time and many Central European names are still derived from the original name. After the city also became part of the Byzantine Empire had passed over, in the 12th century the Comnenes emperor took over who declared himself independent Trabzon the city. 1461, one year before the Empire Trabzon finally capitulated to Mehmet II, the place was conquered by the Ottoman troops.

But the real sensation is the Roman-Byzantine castle, which sits high above the city on a ridge, the construction of which can be traced back to the 2nd century BC. There are many stories surrounding the place, which was initially called colonia under the Romans. One is, for example, the capture of the castle by the Seljuk troops under the leadership of Karaboğa. Since the castle was considered invincible, the Byzantine troops were relatively relaxed about the siege. This was then relatively unsuccessful after months. So that Karaboğa resorted to a ruse similar to the Trojan horse and smuggled a few boxes with elite soldiers into the castle to have the gates opened. Now he could take the castle in a flash. During the First World War, the castle and the place gained worldwide attention when Armenians holed up in the castle in front of Turkish associations in 1915. Some sources claim that these were Armenian civilians who wanted to protect themselves from forced relocation. The others claim that these were Armenian freedom troops who wanted to actively disrupt the supply routes through this place from here.
