Grass head is a small tourist town in the Grabenbruch region (Escarpment) the south african province Mpumalanga.

Graskop is located in a wide valley of the rift valley (Escarpment), which runs here in the midst of an impressive landscape. It is the local center of the surrounding area and the Base for activities in the nearby Blyde River Canyon.

getting there

By bus

In the street

  • Of Mbombela (Nelspruit), the more scenic route first leads over the R37 bis Sabie, then about 30 km further north on the R532.
  • From Paul Kruger Gate of Kruger National Park on the R536 bis Hazyview then via the R535 and the Kowyn's Pass to Graskop, about 40 km from Hazyview.
  • Of Lydenburg the R37 leads over the scenic Long Tom Pass (2150 m) and Devil's Knuckles to Sabie, then continue on the R532.
  • From the north on the R36 via the Abel Erasmus Pass, then either on the R532 along the Blyde River Canyons or on the R36 over Ohrigstad, after another 20 km turn onto the R533 and cross the Robber's Pass and Pilgrim's rest according to Graskop.

Since the city as such is only quite small, all destinations in the city are easily accessible on foot.

Tourist Attractions

  • In the shop of Africa Silks on the main street you can watch the silk weavers at work. The associated silkworm farm is halfway between Graskop and Buschbuckridge.

There is a smaller mall for groceries. In addition, many shops and stalls that offer everything that makes the tourist's heart beat faster. Some things are a matter of taste, like that Elephant dung, or the underwear of the Bantu tribe of the Matabele.

Are a specialty Macadamia nutswho are here by the roadside of informal traders Tobe offered. The nuts from Australia belong to the same plant genus as the South African Protea bushes and thrive here extremely well. The nuts are available in several flavors and just - as the South Africans say - lekker.

  • Pancakes, there are numerous tasty versions on the main street, e.g. at Harrie's or next door at Silverspoon.
  • Abe's at the Glass House. Small but fine restaurant with very good cuisine and a cozy atmosphere.

  • To the old mine. About 4 km outside the guest farm with a comfortably furnished chalet in a park-like area. Self-catering or B&B. Very nice German hosts who are at your side with great tips.

One of Mac Mac Pools between Graskop and Sabie.
  • Mac Mac Pools. Approx. 15 km on the R532 towards Sabie. Several smaller tubs washed out of the rocks, which are traversed in small cascades by a stream that rises here. Generously laid out picnic areas. Ideal for splashing around and playing. Guarded parking lot, daily charge 20 Rand per car.
  • Mac Mac Falls. Approx. 12 km on the R532 towards Sabie. The 50 m high waterfall can be observed from a viewing platform. Guarded parking lot, 10 rand per person.
  • Kowyn Pass. 2 km on the R 533 towards Hazyview.
  • Pinnacle. Free standing rock needle on the edge of the demolition. Obviously named after the Scottish Munroe (mountain over 3000 ft) of the same name, whose rocky summit structure was formerly considered to be impassable. Access approx. 1 km via the R532, then R534. Guarded parking lot, 10 rand per car.
  • God's Window. Impressive view from a small ledge into the depths and, with good visibility, far over the 700 m lower area Lowveld. Short walk through the cloud forest. Very touristy. Guarded parking lot 10 Rand per car, souvenirs and kiosk. Access like the Pinnacle, but about 8 km further on the R534.
  • Wonder View. Viewpoint similar to God's Window, but far less touristy and free. Access via the R534. About 2 km north of God's Window.
  • Lisbon Falls. Approx. 10 km on the R532 direction Blyde River Canyon (North). Guarded parking lot 10 rand per car.
  • Berlin Falls. Approx. 13 km on the R532 direction Blyde River Canyon (North). Guarded parking lot 10 rand per car.
