Mbombela, the former Nelspruit, is the capital of the province Mpumalanga in South Africa. About 220,000 people live in it, including the suburbs.
background
The city is located in the east of the country, about 330 kilometers east of Johannesburg. Mbombela was one of the venues for the Soccer World Cup 2010
The starting point for the founding of the city was the construction of a railway line connecting Johannesburg with today's seaport Maputo should connect. Stations were built along the railway line, one of which was built here on the Crocodile River in 1892. The Nel brothers founded a settlement on their adjacent farmland in 1905, which extended to the place Nelspruit developed.
In October 2009 the city was turned into Mbombela renamed. Since the old name plates may remain for a certain transition period, the old name Nelspruit will probably continue to be used in parallel for a few years.
Mbombela is also the name of the parent municipality to which Hazyview, Kaapsehoop and White River belong.
