Vilanculos (Vilankulo) is a city in the southeast Mozambique, right on the coast. The region is popular with tourists for its beaches and diving spots. Although it was hit by a severe cyclone in February 2007 and many houses and streets were destroyed, some hotels are taking bookings again and efforts are being made to repair the damage. During the colonial period, the name was changed to Vilanculos, as the Portuguese do not use the letter K often and usually use the "sch" sound value of the letter S. After independence, the name was changed back to Vilankulo - with K and without S. Nowadays the district is called Vilanculos and the city Vilankulo.

By plane
Vilanculos Airport is not far from most hotels and is served by a small number of airlines. The relatively large Mozambican LAM flies to Maputo and from there to Johannesburg and other destinations in Mozambique, Pelican Air comes from Johannesburg and Mbombela (Nelspruit) and ETA - Travelmax flies from Lanseria near Johannesburg to Vilanculos.

- [1] - 12 km north of Vilanculos. Nice boutique backpackers with 4-person dorms and double rooms. The bedrooms are housed in stele huts. The food is excellent and there are freshly caught sea creatures on a regular basis. The beach is about 100 meters away and not developed for tourists. Accordingly, one is i. d. R. for yourself. Tours to the neighboring islands are possible. Bed and breakfast around € 12-25, depending on the room.

- Casa Rex - 22km from Vilanculos, located on the beach overlooking the sea. All rooms with sea view (luxury rooms with balcony). A restaurant with very good food is in the hotel, as well as a bar and a pool. Bed and breakfast around € 75-120 depending on the room.
- Vilanculos Beach Lodge - 5km north of town, right on the beach. Accommodation in individual huts with thatched roofs. Restaurant and beach bar, as well as two swimming pools. Overnight stay and breakfast for around € 75-150 depending on the season and equipment. Credit cards are accepted.
