The Great Alpine Highway leads from Christchurch above Arthur's Pass to Greymouth.

The approximately 250 km long route leads from the Pacific coast through the Canterbury Plains and the New Zealand Alps to the west coast on the Tasman Sea. The route follows from Christchurch over the pass to the Lake Brunner at Jacksons the railway route of the Tranzalpine, while the railroad dem Arnold River to the Gray River follows, the road continues the Taramakau River along to the Tasman Sea.
