To know

How to orient yourself

Neighborhoods

It includes the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Borough Park, Kensington, Parkville, Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach.

  • Sunset Park it is often referred to as New York City's little Puerto Rico and Brooklyn's Chinatown and is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the entire city. It is located less than 20 minutes from Downtown Brooklyn, Sunset Park is the area where many families come to shop, while those who live there prefer to go to the 5th Avenue area between 60th and 44th Streets. Its hilly terrain offers beautiful views not only of Downtown Brooklyn but also of Manhattan, Staten Island, Jersey City and the nearby Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. In addition to the Hispanic area with many immigrant families of Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican and other origins, the Chinese community is well present in Sunset Park thanks to the countless restaurants that are located along 8th Avenue between 60th and 40th Street. In addition to diversity, however, Sunset Park has problems related to the spread of drugs and was the scene of a frightening tornado on August 8, 2007.
  • Borough Park has the largest community of Orthodox Jews in the city. You will see kosher food everywhere and shops closed every Friday night and Saturday, but open on Sunday for religious reasons. If you've never seen anything like it, then a trip to Borough Park is recommended.
  • Kensington is located south of Prospect Park. It's a very diverse neighborhood, if not the most diverse in all of Brooklyn and all United States. This is also one of the trendiest areas of the moment, with many bars, restaurants and shops that are springing up. You can get there by subway with lines F and G to Church Avenue, and with line Q to Beverly Road and Cortelyou Road.
  • Bay Ridge traditionally a residential neighborhood inhabited mainly by Italians, Irish and Norwegians, it has recently also seen the arrival of Arabs, Asians and Russians. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge comes here from Staten Island. Fort Hamilton, the US Army base, is also located in this area. Food is very good in this neighborhood and is one of the best bar areas outside of the central Brooklyn area.
  • Bensonhurst once it was an Italian area but now there are many Albanians, Pakistanis, Koreans, Chinese, Mexicans and many immigrants from Eastern Europe. Despite everything it is still the center of the Italian community of Brooklyn and is one of the most famous Italian-American neighborhoods in the country. The subway runs on the surface and still has a certain "old New York" vibe. Many of Brooklyn's lesser-known restaurants (known here, but ignored by the rest) are located in Bensonhurst. You can get there with the D or M lines to 18th, or 20th Avenue, or Bay Parkway.
