Staten Island is the district furthest away from the city center of New York.

To know

Although still primarily a residential neighborhood, State Island has changed a lot since the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in 1964. It is the closest borough to the New Jersey and at Newark International Airport. Consider staying on Staten Island for its proximity to the airport, taxis that are cheaper and faster than Manhattan.

How to orient yourself

Express buses

Another option is to take one of the "express buses" from Manhattan on Staten Island. These are very convenient if you need to travel to parts of the South Shore, which is the farthest part of Staten Island from the ferry terminal and has fewer routes than the more populated North Shore area. The fare from $ 6 [2] you can pay with the MetroCard, Express Bus Plus MetroCards or in cash (coins). bills, pennies and half-dollar coins are not accepted.

  • The routes X1 is X10 run through Broadway in Manhattan (departing from Central Park South / Seventh Avenue and East 57th Street / Third Avenue respectively), with X1 passing through Hylan Boulevard and Richmond Avenue to Eltingville, and X10 passing through nearby Staten Island Expressway (North and South Gannon Avenues) to Port Richmond. Both lines run daily, the X1 24/7, while the X10 runs from Castleton Avenue / Jewett Avenue from 5:25 am to 10 pm weekdays, 5:30 am-9pm Saturdays, and 6:30 am-9pm Sunday. [3]
  • X17 reaches parts of the South Shore on weekdays from 4:05 am to 3:45 pm, and on weekends from 5:00 am to 7:00 pm. Manhattan from 10:25 to 23:30 on weekdays, and from 7:00 to 20.30 on weekends.

Waiting times during peak hours and on weekday evenings are 4-10 minutes, 15-25 minutes at other times, and every hour at night. Staten Island bus maps [4][5] they are informative only.

How to get around

A train on the Staten Island Railway
The S76 bus stops on New Dorp Lane in New Dorp

On the train

There Staten Island Railway is a hybrid railway line between normal and underground trains. The fares are the same as those of the metro (US $ 2.25), it runs 24 hours a day, at 15-minute intervals during the day up to times during the night, synchronized with the timetable of the ferries. Fares collected only at St. George Ferry Terminal and Tompkinsville (You can walk from Stapleton to the ferry even if it's only a mile, but it's not recommended to do this at night as ferries only run once an hour and the area isn't completely safe ). During peak hours the service is guaranteed and the rides end in Great Kills.

By bus

Buses serve the whole island very well [6]. There are 2 types:

  • THE local bus which serve all of Staten Island and are distinguished by the letter S before the number (ex. S55, S78). They have uncomfortable plastic seats and cost $ 2.25. During peak hours some are "Limited" and stop only on main roads and interchange points. For example, the S62 starts at Jewett Avenue, making all stops east, while the S92 makes all stops west of Jewett Avenue that the S62 would normally do, stopping only on major roads such as Clove Road east of Jewett Avenue.
  • The express bus they are distinguished by the 'X' (ex. X1, X10, X17, etc). These range from Staten Island to Manhattan, are more comfortable and cost $ 6.

Many of the sections end in St. George Ferry Terminal. Other important points are Port Richmond, with some buses terminating at Richmond Terrace on Port Richmond Avenue; the Staten Island Mall is Eltingville Transit Center in South Shore, the last place to find electronic ticket offices for Metrocards and express service for Manhattan.

Fares are paid in quarter-dollar or one-dollar coins. You can use the MetroCard that you buy in the deli or in the ticket offices. Buses are regular but off-peak times are rarer on Staten Island. Be prepared and also check the Guide-A-Ride that are located at the stops or check the MTA's BusTime system to check timetables.
