Great Heath (Niederlausitz) - Große Heide (Niederlausitz)

It contains a mummy tomb - the Illmersodrf church

The Great heather is a small heather and forest landscape southwest of cottbus. It lies between that Gräbendorfer See in the west and that Spremberger reservoir in the East. It is rarely visited by tourists - more likely when passing through on bike tours.

places

  • The four villages can be found in the north Illmersdorf (Lower Sorbian: Njamorojce), Koschendorf (Lower Sorbian: Kóšnojce) and Leuthen (Lower Sorbian: Lutol).
  • Lying in the east Siewisch (Lower Sorbian: Źiwize) and Foliage (Lower Sorbian: Lubošc).
  • In the south are Goritz (Lower Sorbian: Chorice), Radensdorf (Lower Sorbian: Radowašojce) and Griffin Grove (Lower Sorbian: Maliń).

The place Goritz consists of only one or two houses between the Altdöberner and the Gräbendorfer See. Originally, the entire place was supposed to give way to the opencast mine. The changes in Germany at the end of the 1990s brought opencast mining to a standstill. From 1961 to 1976 the Greifenhain opencast mine revolved around the village. Until 1990, the large opencast mining equipment was assembled next to the village. In the excursion restaurant “Drehpunkt Göritz” there is a small exhibition on the history of opencast mining.

getting there

The villages on the Große Heide are located southwest of Cottbus and are best reached by car via the main road B169 (Departures Leuthen, Laubst or via Drebkau in the south). The train stops every two hours at the Leuthen stop (RB18 Cottbus ↔ Falkenberg / Elster).

The region can be easily explored by bike. There are some separate idyllic bike paths and a local themed tour that crosses the region. Most of the country roads are also rather quieter. The designated cycle path from Illmersdorf to Casel am Gräbendorfer See is an unpaved forest path, but it is still easy to navigate.
