history
Extract from the Wikipedia page of Gschwend: Frickenhofen, which was first mentioned in a document in 1293, is the oldest documented place in the municipality. However, it is assumed that the Gschwend settlement has existed since the middle of the 12th century. Not much later, the forest around Gschwend was also cleared. Schwenden, which gave Gschwend its name, was a special type of clearing. The bark of the trees was peeled off, whereupon they withered and then either died or easily infected and burned to verdwindle could be brought. The flame in the Gschwender coat of arms indicates this burning down.
Gschwend was initially a rather insignificant settlement, but developed due to its convenient location at the intersection of the streets of Schwäbisch Hall above Gaildorf to Schwäbisch Gmünd (Salt road from Hall to the south, today's federal road 298) and from Welzheim to Bask (Cannstatter Straße) to a center of rural trade. In the 16th century, the court in Seelach was moved to Gschwend. There were large cattle fairs and fairs have been held since 1760. Today's municipality of Gschwend belonged to the Oberamt for a long time Gaildorf and from 1938 to the district of Backnang. When this was dissolved by the district reform in 1973, only Altersberg, Frickenhofen and Gschwend came to what is now the municipality Ostalbkreis.
