The Guanacaste National Park is a national park in Belize in the Cayo District
background
This national park, named after the Guanacaste tree, is the smallest national park in Belize with only 2 hectares. This is run by the Belize Audubon Society [1]
Opening times are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entry is 5 Bz $ for foreigners.
history
The Guanacaste National Park was established as a royal reserve in 1973 and raised to national park status in 1990.
landscape
About 3 km of well-kept paths lead through the national park.
Flora and fauna
In the national park you will find secondary tropical rainforests, consisting mainly of hardwood deciduous forest and cohune palm forest, the small black orchid (Belize's National Flower) as well as the guanacaste (tubroos) tree, which is one of the largest trees in Central America.
The national park is particularly suitable for bird watching, as over 120 different bird species have been counted here. Some observation platforms with signs and an information house in the entrance area make it easier to identify the birds being observed.
In the north, mine discovered a Mayan chamber, but it has not been archaeologically investigated to this day.
