Geographical notes
Geographically it is divided into three regions separated by the Sierra de Guanajuato. The region north of the Sierra is called Llanos del Norte and is an arid, flat and rocky area. The Sierra area is mountainous with highlands exploited for farming and the region known as del Bajío, which includes the plain located south of the Sierra de Guanajuato characterized by extensive agriculture and very high rainfall.
Background
Guanajuato was one of the first territories colonized by the Spaniards, in 1520, attracted by the rich silver mines that are still among the most productive in the world today.
