Background
The city was founded in 1542 by a Franciscan friar called Fra Juan de San Miguel, who baptized the primitive village with the name of San Miguel el Grande. It was a crucial point of the ancient Royal Way, in fact it was on the road that led to Zacatecas. The city distinguished itself during the Mexican War of Independence. General Ignacio Allende, a native of San Miguel, was one of the main leaders of the first phase of the war against Spanish rule. Allende was captured in battle and beheaded, today he is considered a national hero. The town of San Miguel el Grande on March 8, 1826 was elevated to the rank of city, and changed its name to San Miguel de Allende, in honor of the great general.
