Hello | नमस्ते (Namaste) |
Thank you | धन्यवाद (dhanyavād) |
The Hindi (local name: Hindi / हिन्दी) is the most widely spoken of India's languages: according to the 1999 edition of the World Almanac, more than 550 million people use it as their first language. Officially, Hindi should serve as a lingua franca in India, which in practice is not always the case. 43% of the Indian population say they have Hindi (or one of its dialects) as their mother tongue. Spoken primarily in northern and central India, it is an Indo-European language of the Indo-Aryan branch of languages, which is its largest family, derived from Sanskrit and various Prakrits, written most of the time by means of the alphasyllabary devanāgarī, which is read and written from left to right.
