The Fiji, also called Fiji Islands, are a country formed by an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean in Melanesia. They are a popular vacation destination.

Understand

The Republic of Fiji is made up of four regions called Divisions: the Central Division, the Northern Division, the Eastern Division and the Western Division. These divisions are subdivided into provinces for a total of 14 provinces in the country. In addition, the archipelago of Rotuma located north of the main archipelago has the status of dependency and is therefore classified separately.

In all, Fiji is made up of 332 islands, of which about a third is inhabited. The two most important islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Viti Levu welcomes the capital Suva and nearly three-quarters of the country's total population. The islands are mountainous with peaks reaching 1 200 m altitude and are covered with tropical forests.

Due to their geographical location very close to the date line which runs just east of the archipelago, Fiji is "ahead" of most of the world.

History

Fiji gained independence in 1970 after being a colony British for almost a century. Democracy was interrupted there twice in military coups in 1987 because the government was perceived to be disproportionately led by the community. indian formed by descendants of contract workers brought by the British in the 19the century. These blows, in addition to the constitution of 1990 which cements control of the country by the natives melanesians, led to a massive emigration of Indians. This demographic loss led to economic hardship, but ensured that the Melanesians formed the majority. A new constitution established in 1997 is more equitable. Democratic elections in 1999 had an Indo-Fijian elected as head of government, but a civil coup in May 2000 threw the country into political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government. There was another military coup in 2006. A new constitution was adopted in 2013 and elections were held in 2014.

Weather

Fiji has a tropical marine climate. There are few seasonal differences. Tropical storms can occur from November to April. People sensitive to heat should visit the archipelago instead in winter in the southern hemisphere (June - August).

By plane

The main airport of the country is the international airport of Nadi located on the western side of Viti Levu.

It takes three hours of flight to reach Fiji from the New Zealand, four hours fromAustralia and ten hours from Los Angeles.

Circulate

By car

The road network is relatively good, especially on Viti Levu. Nonetheless, stray animals are often part of the pavement decor, not to mention potholes. You must therefore be vigilant when traveling. Driving at night can be more risky. So, it is best to do this only when absolutely necessary.

Driving is on the left side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right in local vehicles. Signage meets most international standards. The distances are expressed according to the metric system. The distances to the main cities are written in white characters on a green background. The road system is not numbered. The speed limits are 80 km / h on the roads and 50 km / h in the city.

The international driver's license is required if you want to drive in Fiji, but usually the national driver's license will do the trick as well.

It is important to find out about the conditions and prices for renting a vehicle before your departure in order to avoid unpleasant surprises once there. You must be 21 years old to drive a rental car in Fiji.

On a boat

The boat is one of the most used means of getting to the archipelagos Yasawa and Mamanuca. A single company manages the service of these islands and the boats generally make a round trip during the day, passing from island to island. There are also fast catamarans to some of the Mamanucas islands. We can finally charter private boats.

By plane

Air Fiji and Pacific Sun, the two companies offering domestic connections to Fiji, offer flights to most of the visitable islands of Fiji from Nadi or from Suva. The prices are interesting, especially since the flight over the archipelago is fascinating.

For short distances, from Nadi to the Mamanucas in particular, the seaplane and the helicopter have the advantage of being very fast by making the trip in only ten minutes in addition to offering visitors a flight at any time. Some resorts, like the Yasawa Island Resort, are only accessible by this mode of transportation. For short distances, the prices are quite reasonable compared to the boat.
