Suva is the capital of the islands Fiji.
To know
Suva sits on a hilly peninsula on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu. It is a busy trading port. Its dimensions are considerable when compared to other capitals of the island states of Oceania. However, it lacks beaches.
How to orient yourself
Rodwell Road is the central street of Suva. The municipal market and the bus station overlook this artery which changes its name several times.
The continuation of Rodwell Road to the south is Scott Street where the tourist office and the post office building are located. Almost opposite, at the intersection of Thomson with Pier street, is the old Garrick hotel, inaugurated in 1904, while nearby is Cumming street, the main shopping artery.
At the confluence with Renwick Road, Scott Street changes its name to Victoria Parade. A block to the east is the Catholic cathedral dominated by the modern yet banal building of the central bank of Fiji.
South sector
Victoria Parade leads to the south sector of the center. The city library, the government building in front of Albert Park and the Grand Pacific Hotel, a famous colonial period hotel, no longer in operation, overlook the street. South of Albert Park are the Thurston Botanical Gardens where numerous species of tropical flowers are grown. Cokobau Road separates Albert Park from Thurston Gardens and provides access to the Fiji Museum, which opened in 1904.
After the confluence with Cokobau Road, the Victoria Parade changes its name to Queen Elizabeth Drive, a street lined with old colonial buildings. Taking the Ratu Sukuna Road you will reach the Fiji Parliament building in a panoramic position overlooking the sea and the surrounding mountains. From the Parliament, take the Vuya Road which leads to the extreme tip of the peninsula where Suva rises in correspondence with the complex of the Pacific theological institute.
Eastern sector
Queen Elizabeth Drive goes up Laucala Bay where the stadiums area and the stadium complex are located.University of the South Pacific community-run by 12 island states of theOceania.
