Vanua Levu is one of the Fiji Islands.

To know

Second of the Islands Fiji by surface, Vanua Levu receives few tourists compared to its big sister, the island Viti Levu, located about sixty km further south. For some this is a virtue because it allows us to observe the authentic life of the population.

Vanua Levu, the "Terra Grande" is a mountainous island with articulated coasts. On its eastern side there is a very deep bay, that of Natewa while the northern side is protected by a long coral barrier, the "Cakaulevu Reef" which forms a vast lagoon. The northern coast enjoys a drier climate which favors the cultivation of sugar cane while the southern coast is more humid with numerous palm groves especially in the east and some strips of rainforest.

The maximum altitude is that of Monte Batini (1,111 m a.s.l.).

Territories and tourist destinations

Urban centers

  • Labasa - Administrative capital of the northern division, Labasa is a center of 30,000 inhabitants over which the Indo-Fijians prevail. It has little to hold the tourist's attention.
  • Nabouwalu[1]
  • Savusavu - Despite the nickname "Hidden Paradise", Savusavu has actually been discovered since that day by tourists from all over the world.
  • Udu Point

Moderate prices

  • Vatukaluvi Holiday House, Savusavu, 679 850 143, fax: 679 850 344. Described by Lonely Planet as a "great deal" but provided you enjoy the secluded life. This is a furnished house in the south of the Savusavu peninsula, about 1 km west of the airport and in a panoramic position overlooking the sea. It can accommodate up to 4 people. Reservations must be made through the Cover Shed Marina
  • Hot Springs Hotel (Savusavu), 679 885 0195, fax: 679 885 0430. The hotel is located on a hill with a panoramic view and consists of 48 rooms, some with air conditioning. The lack of a nearby beach makes up for a swimming pool.
  • Mumu's Resort (17 km east of Savusavu), 679 885 0416. Traditional seaside huts at ridiculously low prices but there is no hot water and ... beware of dogs.
  • Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat, 679 828 3001, 679 992 4001. Secluded on a small bay on the east coast, Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat can only be reached by boat from Taveuni (15 minutes).

Average prices

  • Daku Resort, Savusavu, 679 885 0046, fax: 679 885 0334. Accommodation in traditional huts (bure). Between the hotel and the beach (not great) a dusty road stands in between.
  • Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort (On the Lesiaceva tip, 6km southwest of Savusavu). The hotel complex is an accurate reproduction of a traditional village with a restaurant in the shape of a pagan temple. The range of recreational activities is very wide ranging from glass bottom boat rides to aerobics sessions in the pool. It is a hotel suitable for newly weds on their honeymoon

High prices

  • Nukubati Island, 679 603 0919, fax: 679 603 0918, @. On a small, privately owned island, Nukubati Island Resort is the closest hotel to the coral reef that surrounds the northern shores of Vanua Levu. The hotel consists of 7 very spacious bungalows overlooking a coral beach. Skype: nukubati.island
  • Moody's Namena. On the Namenalala Island, privately owned.
