The Serbian is a Slavic language, official in Serbia and in part of the Bosnia and herzegovina (Republika Srpska), almost identical to Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, therefore the traveler can communicate with his helper in Croatia, throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro also.
Particularities of Serbian reflected in this guide:
- the absence of articles;
- the declension of nouns, adjectives and pronouns (seven cases);
- the agreement of the participle in past time, in gender and in number with the subject.
Pronunciation
Serbian is written with the Cyrillic alphabet as well as with the Latin alphabet. The latter is used mainly in everyday life and in some newspapers, Cyrillic being used mainly in official documents and in many newspapers. The advantage of Serbian writing is the almost perfect correspondence between pronunciation and writing. Even foreign proper names are phonetically transcribed, including in the Latin alphabet. Therefore, the letters "q", "w", "x" and "y" are not used.
In this guide, only the Latin script is used.
The accent can strike any syllable of the word except the last. Some words are not accented: the sluggish forms of pronouns, certain prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs.
