Gerardmer (German Gerdsee, medieval Geroldsee) is a city in the department Vosges. It is located on the lake of the same name and west of the main ridge of the Vosges.
background
The city owes its name Gerhard of Alsace (* around 1030; † April 14, 1070 in Remiremont), although this was subject to frequent changes over the centuries. More than two centuries after the death of the Duke of Lorraine, in 1285, the place was mentioned for the first time (as "Geramer").
In 1875, the first French tourist office was set up in Gerardmer. Since then, the place has been marketed as the "Pearl of the Vosges". The place is strongly influenced by tourism and has a corresponding infrastructure.
The Gerdsee is natural and the largest lake in the Vosges and in Lorraine.
The cheese "Munster-Géromé" was invented here by monks, whereby there was a long dispute with the Alsatian Muenster for the rights to the origin.
The soft cheese "Géramont", which is only sold in Germany, is produced in Le Tholy in the west of the Vosges.
