Gokceada (Imvros) is an island in the Turkey.

background

With a length of over 30 kilometers and a width of 13 kilometers, Gökçeada is the largest island in Turkey. Settlements could be proven until early antiquity. In ancient times the island was dedicated to Hermes and was considered the most important place of worship of Hermes. Byzantines followed until the Ottomans were able to take the island before the fall of Constantinople. In 1919 the island became Greek for four years. The Greek island formerly called Imbros was incorporated into the Treaty of Lausanne In 1923 it was reassigned to Turkey, but on the condition that the Greek population may stay. Ninety years later, the Greek population is a tiny minority, but the flair has remained.

getting there

By plane

The island has an airport called Gökçeada Airport (IATA: GKD, ICAO: LTFK). This is seasonal by Anadolu Jet from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport approached.

By train

By bus

The closest major bus station is certainly in Çanakkale. This has connections with e.g. Ankara, Ayvalık, Bandırma, Bursa, Edirne, Istanbul, or Izmir. From here the ship continues.

In the street

Anyone coming from the north by car Edirne or from the east from direction Istanbul should choose the route via Kabatepe. To do this, drive from Edirne from the D100 to the D550 to the Gallipoli peninsula. From Istanbul you drive on the D100 on the D110. From there you can also turn back onto the D550. Who from the south e.g. from the direction Izmir comes whose path leads over Çanakkale. From here you can take the ferry directly or, due to the better connections from Çanakkale to the Gallipoli peninsula, and from Kabatepe take the ferry to the island.

By boat

The best ferry connections are in Kabatepe on the Gelibolu Peninsula. Here the ferries run several times a day in summer. In winter, the frequency is heavily dependent on the weather. There are other ferry connections with Çanakkale. However, this is only driven a few times a week.

mobility

Those who really want to explore the island should bring their own vehicle, as there are only limited dolmuş connections. The best are between the port and Gökçeada town and Gökçeada town and Kaleköy town.
