Tourist Attractions

The Museo Anthropológico Sebastian Englert, in the north of the village, explains the history of the island very clearly. Most of the carvings and objets d'art are reproductions; the originals are exhibited in museums around the world, particularly the Thor Heyerdahl Museum in Oslo and the British Museum in London. Open Tue to Fri 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm, Sat and Sun 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, admission US $ 2

Not far from the museum and easily reached on foot via a coastal path is the Ahu Tahai. There are five moai, some of which are heavily weathered. The site was restored from 1968 to 1970 by the American archaeologist William Mulloy. A few meters further north are Ahu Vai Uri and Ahu Ko Te Riku, each with a moai. Here you can see spectacular sunsets every evening - and take photos.

There is a small one at the western exit of the village Botanical Garden. Here you can see, among other things, back-breeding of the Toromiro tree. This used to cover large parts of the island. Attempts to replant it extensively have so far failed, as the harsh climate and vermin repeatedly destroyed the seedlings.

The cave is located southwest of the village, behind the airport Ana Kai Tangata. On a stone slab you can see interesting wall paintings, which unfortunately are a bit weathered. The final scenes of the film Rapa Nui were filmed in this cave.
