Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe, the former Rhodesia, located in the northeast of the country.

Districts

View of the center of Kopje.

The surrounding counties are Rural Harare, Chintungwiza and Epworth. The city proper is stretched far apart; the better residential areas along Samora Machel and Josiah Tongogara Av. are comparatively safe, for the townships this only applies during the day at best.

The numerous one-way regulations in the center, which is laid out like a chessboard, can quickly confuse motorists.

background

The city was called Salisbury until April 18, 1982. Compared to other large cities in southern Africa, the atmosphere appears more cultivated.

getting there

Cheap flights from Frankfurt were offered in summer 2015 Ethiopian[1] as Emirates (above Dubai). From Europe, Harare can also be reached via the frequent connections from Johannesburg, among others with South African Airways..

Harare is served by practically all airlines in the countries of southern Africa, so there are connections to Durban, Windhoek, Lilongwe, Luanda, Gaborone, Nairobi, Beira, Maputo Etc.

The low-cost airline Fly Africa Zimbabwe flies with routes to Bulawayo, Johannesburg-OR Tambo, Lubumbashi and Lusaka

mobility

The minibuses (from US $ 1) used by the natives as a local means of transport are always overcrowded. Whites should limit themselves to using taxis, especially with luggage.

Eight people are often squeezed into a normal taxi. During the day a ride in the center costs US $ 1-2 per person, the whole vehicle US $ 5, which is essential for whites at night when the tariffs rise. Harares taxi drivers see, like many of their colleagues worldwide, foreign tourists as milking cows, hard negotiating the fare in advance is essential!

There are bus stations in the city for local traffic

security

Crime is significantly higher in Harare than anywhere else. Armed robberies of cars (“carjacking”) and the targeted, organized tapping of new arrivals are also not uncommon. You should refrain from driving at night in the car or as a passenger in the bus, also because of the sometimes miserable condition of the roads. Carrying a flashlight makes sense, but you should also use the Central Business District do not walk at night.
