Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi. It is located in the Central Region about 100 km west of Lake Malawi. With around 1,000,000 inhabitants, Lilongwe is the largest city in the country.

The town Lilongwe is divided into an old town in the south and a new town in the north. That lies in between Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary. The old town has developed around the former village of Lilongwe. The new town came into being when the country's first president became the capital of Zomba moved to Lilongwe. The city takes its name from the river of the same name, it rises in the Dzalanyama mountain range, flows through the Lilongwe valley, then flows into the Linthipe river and finally into the Lake Malawi. Lilongwe is divided into several dozen areas, e.g. Area 32 or Sector 4.

Since the offer and the quality of the food in Malawi practically do not differ between market stall and restaurant, it is advisable to visit the former.

The market is located in the Old Town right on the riverside. There you will find some board and cardboard stalls (even labeled as "restaurant") where you can do the usual things (see Malawi Overview), as well as some deep-frying stalls.
