Haugesund is a city in the Fylke Rogaland in Norway about halfway between Mountains and Stavanger at Karmesund. It is the capital of the commune of the same name (municipality).

background

Haugesund is a city of festivals: the Silda Jazz Festival has been held in the summer since 1987; the "International Film Festival" with the award of the Amanda Prize, the Norwegian counterpart to the "Oscar", has now established itself in the cultural calendar Activities, the region reflects on its historical roots: the narrow strait "Smedasund", which lies in front of the city, is one of the oldest navigable transport routes in the north and is the eponym of the entire country, "Nordvegen" - "the way north". Around the sound there are traces of early settlement from the founding time of the Norwegian Empire. In recent years these antiquities have been increasingly prepared for tourism, see under "Sights".
