Hollandse IJssel - Hollandse IJssel

The Hollandse IJssel (also: Hollandsche IJssel) is a river in the provinces Utrecht and South Holland, the one between Nieuwegein and the Nieuwe Maas east of Rotterdam runs.

background

The Hollandse IJssel was originally a tributary of the Lek, which began behind Vreeswijk. The damming of the arm in the 13th century had two causes: the damming of the Rijn near Wijk bij Duurstede had turned the Lek into a larger river and the cultivation of the Dutch moorland required efficient drainage. The latter could only be achieved with a lower water level in the Hollandse IJssel. The Count of Holland Floris V therefore had a dam built (near Klaphek) in 1285. Since then, the Hollandse IJssel has only been supplied with water via dug watercourses.

The river springs from the Merwedekanaal in the middle of Nieuwegein. Shortly before he leaves Nieuwegein, the Kromme IJssel branches off. The river then flows towards the nearby IJsselstein (Atstadtkern on the left bank). The Hollandse IJssel flows in a north-westerly direction to Montfoort. The river continues to flow over Willeskop to Oudewater. This is where the mouth of the Lange Linschoten is located. The river then forms the provincial border between Utrecht and Zuid-Holland for a long time. The mouth of the Vlist, a moor river that separates the Lopikerwaard polder from the Krimpenerwaard, lies near the town of Haastrecht. The Hollandse IJssel forms the northern drainage ditch for both polders.

Then comes the largest city on the river, Gouda. Shortly before, there is a lock complex, the Waaiersluis, from which the river is canalized. The tides manage to come from the sea to Gouda. The difference between ebb and flow is also 1.80 m in summer and up to 3.30 m in winter. From Gouda, the Hollandse wesentlichssel is a much wider river. Via Gouderak, Moordrecht, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, the river comes into the urbanized area of Krimpen aan den IJssel and the even larger Chapel aan den IJssel on the other bank of the river. A storm surge barrier, the oldest part of the, has been located between the two places since 1958 Delta Works.

The Hollandse IJssel flows into the Nieuwe Maas at Kralingseveer. The former island on the other bank got its name from the village of the same name because of its location: IJsselmonde.
