The Hortobágy National Park, also as Hortobágy Puszta is the largest contiguous national park in Hungary.

  • The national park was established in 1973 and today it covers 82,000 hectares of land. Rare, specially protected animal and plant species can be observed here.
  • The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

Flora and fauna

  • Oak trees
  • Various types of sage, the bulbous cinderella, dog tooth grass, puffed sea lavender, chamomile, white water lily, pond roses, marsh marigold, marsh iris, dwarf almond, common comfrey and many more.
  • Curly swallows, the triel, cormorants, cranes, short-toed larks, bog ducks, red-footed falcons, white-tailed eagles, saker falcons, bustards, various species of herons, over 300 species of birds are registered.
  • Other animal species are the Hungarian Gray cattle, Racka sheep, Mangalica pigs, the Kuvasz, the Puli, Horses and many more.
