Hwanghae is a region of the North Korea.

Background

In 1417 the province took the name of Hwanghae, a name that derived from its two main cities: Hwangju (황주; 黃 州) and Haeju (해주; 海 州).

Later in 1954 it split into North Hwanghae and South Hwanghae.


Territories and tourist destinations

This territory is divided into the following two provinces:

  • North Hwanghae
  • South Hwanghae

Urban centers

  • Haeju (해주시) - Capital of the South Hwanghae province.
  • Kaesŏng (개성시) - City adjacent to the border with South Korea. Ancient capital of the Korean Kingdom, with one of the best preserved historical centers in the whole country.
  • Sariwon (사리원 시) - Capital of the North Hwanghae province.
  • Songrim (송림 시)

Other destinations

  • Panmunjeom - Village on the border between North Korea and South Korea, where the 1953 armistice was signed that ended the Korean War. The only place in the world where the cold war is still a reality.

The Museum of American War Atrocities a Sinchon, dedicated to the Sinchon Massacre, an extermination of North Korean civilians and communist sympathizers (35,383 people in all) carried out by US militias between October 17 and November 7, 1950.
