background

history

The current city was founded in the 18th century by Sir William Gordon on the site of the old settlement Inverbreakie founded. In 1828 the port facilities were built; The connection to the railway network took place in 1863. Until 1956, Invergordon served as a naval port for repairing and bunkering warships, which is still evident today from an extensive oil store.

economy

Because of the proximity to the oil fields of the North Sea, the heavy industry for the manufacture of oil drilling platforms developed in the port. In 1971 an aluminum smelter was built. The reason for choosing the location was the supply of cheap electricity from the Hunterston nuclear power station. In 1982 the hut was closed again, which resulted in a sharp rise in unemployment. The Invergordon whiskey distillery has been a major employer since 1959. With Ben Wyvis there was a second whiskey distillery in the city between 1965 and 1977.
