Inwa (Burmese: အင်းဝ မြို့; Pali: Ratnapura - City of the jewel; Alternate name: Ava) is an old royal city south of Mandalay in Myanmar.
background
King Thadominbya founded the city in 1364. In the period that followed, the city experienced an eventful history. In 1527 the kingdom was overrun by the Shan. In 1752 the city was destroyed by the Mon. The future King Bodawpaya declared in 1783 Amarapura to the capital. A strong earthquake in 1841 finally made Inwa meaningless.

The public bus to Sagaing leaves every half hour from the clock tower near Zegyo Market. It also stops in Inwa (MMK 100).
By boat
Of Sagaing and the Sagaing Bridge, there are ferries to Inwa (MMK 10). You can also charter a boat for MMK 500.

Monasteries
- Maha Aungmye Bonzan. The monastery, built in 1818, suffered badly from the earthquake of 1838. In 1873 it was restored.
- Bagaya Kyaung. Inside the teak monastery there is a golden Buddha statue.

- Htilaingshin Pagoda. Recently renovated pagoda.
- Ava Fort. Old fortress south of the city.
- Nanmyin. The only remnant of the palace. This is a 27 m high watchtower (slate due to an earthquake).
- Gaung Say Daga Gate. North gate of the old city wall.
