Geographical notes

The island is of volcanic origin and mainly mountainous, resembling in this the neighboring islands like São Tomé and Príncipe. The highest peak is Pico Basile (3012 m).

Background

Known, in colonial times, with the name of Fernando Pó, in honor of the Portuguese navigator Fernão do Pó who discovered it, after independence from Portugal and the coup of Francisco Macías Nguema Biyogo, the island was renamed with the name of the dictator. At the fall of Biyogo, in 1979, it took the name of Bioko, in honor of Malabo's brother Lopelo Melaka, king of the Bubi. Even today the island is called Otcho by the Bubi people.

Spoken languages

Igbo is spoken here as a minority language.
