When to go
Despite its location near the equator, Malabo offers a humid and dry tropical climate. It is a very rainy and often cloudy city, it has 172 days of rain which are concentrated between March and November. The temperature ranges from 30 to 21 degrees.
Background
The city was founded by the British, who had rented the island from Spain, in 1827. Baptized Port Clarence, was used as a naval station in an attempt to suppress the slave trade. Many newly freed slaves were settled there before the foundation of the Sierra Leone as a colony for freed slaves. While many of them later moved to Sierra Leone, some of their descendants, called Fernandinos, can still be found in Malabo and the surrounding area, where they make up a distinct ethnic group and speak their own Afro-Portuguese dialect.
When the island returned under complete Spanish control, Malabo was renamed Santa Isabel. It was chosen in 1969 to replace the city of Bata (placed on the continent) as the nation's capital and changed its name to Malabo in 1973, as part of President Francisco Macías Nguema's campaign to replace foreign place names with "authentic" African names.
During his "reign of terror", Macías Nguema led to a near-genocide of the Bubi minority, who formed the majority of the population of Bioko Island, and brought many elements of his tribe, the Fang, to Malabo. In the final years of his rule, when Equatorial Guinea was also known as Auschwitz Africa, much of the city's population fled, as did about a third of the nation's population. Malabo has yet to recover from the injuries of that time.
