Yasawa Islands are a subgroup of the Fiji.

To know

Banned from tourism until 1987, the Yasawa Islands are now a popular tourist destination for many, especially since the film Blue Lagoon touted their spectacular landscapes.

A special permit remains in force (Yasawa Backpackers Pass) to visit the Yasawa except for Tavewa.

Geographical notes

The Yasawas are a group of 16 major islands plus another dozen of much smaller size. Of volcanic origin, they stretch in a north-easterly direction starting from the north-west coast of Viti Levu.

Territories and tourist destinations

Below is a list of the Yasawa Islands from south to north:

Kuata Island seen from Vatu Vulu, the highest point of the island of WayaLailai
  • Kuata - The southernmost of the Yasawa has spectacular scenery but no villages. The only possible accommodation is at the hostel Kuata Island Resort on a beautiful beach in front of the island of Waya Sewa. Keep in mind that there is no electricity and meals are not abundant. The prices of dorm beds are modest minus those of private rooms.
The spit of land that emerges at low tide connecting the islands of Waya and Wayaseva
  • Waya Sewa (WayaLailai) - Spectacular, Waya Sewa is slightly larger than Kuata. It is a hilly island whose highest point reaches 349 m. of altitude. From this hill called Vatu Vulu, a panorama embraces that reaches the coasts of Viti Levu. The Wayalailai Resort extends along the south coast, facing the island of Kuata. The accommodation is in buru, huts arranged on two levels of land. On the upper level is the restaurant bar and what used to be the school building of the village of Namara, now divided into 12 rather cramped double rooms. The hotel has an independent electricity generator.

Waya - Yalobi bay
  • Waya - Mountainous island with various opportunities for those who love hiking, Waya is located just north of Waya Sewa. Waya it is considered a good place to experience the local culture: it hosts 4 villages, Nalauwaki, Natawa, Wayalevu, and Yalobi. The latter stretches out over a bay dominated by the 500 m rock mass of Batinareba.

  • Naviti - Largest of the group by extension, Naviti is an island of 33 km² with some villages on its eastern side. The village of Kese is located near the bay of Natuvalo, where there are three hostels plus a scuba diving center.
  • Drawaqa
  • Matacawa Levu
  • Nanuya
  • Nanuya Balavu
  • Nanuya Lailai - Famous for being the backdrop to the movie "Blue Lagoon", Nanuya Lailai has a tiny village inhabited by a handful of families with whom it is still possible to find accommodation, plus a luxurious hotel Nanuya Island Resort. Blue Lagoon Beach is on the western side. Unfortunately, the corals that once existed on its seabed have disappeared.
  • Tavewa - Despite its small size, the island of Tavewa it is of a poignant beauty and bathing in the warm waters of its beaches is an unforgettable experience. Unforgettable also the views from the top of its hills whose sides are covered by luxuriant vegetation. The view of the famous Blue Lagoon on the adjacent island is beautiful Nanuya Lailai. The islanders, reduced to a few dozen, have kind and affable manners also because tourism represents their only source of income. Their guests are not billionaires but students with sleeping bags. Tavewa lacks freshwater springs and drinking water is a precious commodity.
