Route of the Tholos it is an itinerary that develops through some municipalities of the Nebrodi Mountains.

Introduction

The Tholos, or cubburi, are small dry stone buildings, widespread in the Nebrodi area in the area between a Montalbano Elicona, San Piero Patti, Raccuja is Floresta.

Background

Probably built as shepherds' shelters, they have a structure reminiscent of the Apulian trulli and Sardinian nuraghi. These structures have a circular shape and have a pseudocupola and have a single environment, similar to those of the Minoan-Mycenaean civilizations. The perimeter walls, generally dry, are made of shapeless stone or roughly squared blocks of various sizes. The entrance area is made with one or two architraves facing side by side, resting on the masonry of the building or in more recent buildings on stone block jambs. The roof is also made of slab stones. The studies conducted suggest the origin of these buildings dates back to ancient times and testify to the presence of a population possessing a very high constructive knowledge.

In 2012, a project was carried out that involved the four municipalities mentioned so that the tholos are marked with signs and observation points created. More information can be found in the official brochure.
