Gorj County is one of the 41 COUNTY of romania. His residence is the city Targu Jiu.

Historical sources attest that since the Middle Paleolithic the bearers of the culture have found refuge in Gorj. The first administrative-territorial unit documented on the current territory of the county was Jaleș County. The territory of Gorj County was a part of the historical region North Oltenia.
