To know

Jurmala, the pearl of Latvia, is the largest tourist resort in the Baltic Sea. No other place has such long beaches, with tens of kilometers of fine white sand. Behind the dunes, dotted with majestic pines, are the characteristic wooden houses. Next to them, contemporary buildings have sprung up in recent years that blend well with the landscape.

The city has many hotels and guesthouses, which can cater for all tastes. There are swimming pools with sea water and mineral water. Tennis courts and yacht club. Jurmala offers various cultural, recreational and sporting activities. The most popular are the traditional festivals: the Jomas Street Festival and the Fishermen's Festival, both in summer, in July. For unforgettable moments, a summer ferry cruise along the Lielupe River is recommended.

You can learn about the history of the city, and some of Latvian leading exponents famous around the world, in six museums, including one of Latvia's few open-air museums. Walking along the paths immersed in nature it is then possible to immerse yourself in the local flora and fauna.

When to go

Jurmala is beautiful and interesting in every season of the year, but most visitors arrive in the summer months, from June to August. The city is gradually transforming into a venue for conferences and meetings, where guests arrive throughout the year.

Background

Jūrmala's fame as a spa destination began in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Wealthy landowners began opening establishments to relax by the sea, and Russian army officers came here to rest after the Napoleonic wars, returning later with their families. The culmination of development of the Jūrmala area came with the opening of the railway Line-Tukums in 1877 which gave a great boost to the number of visitors, and therefore a boost to the development of the city as a seaside resort. The sea breeze, the aroma of pine, the mineral springs and the sandy beach then led to the opening of numerous well-being within the city.

In Soviet times Jūrmala was popular with Communist officials because of its beaches and sanatoriums - holidays were also given as a reward for the best party members. It became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire Soviet Union. The thermal baths offered numerous services: from mud baths to horse riding and hiking in the woods.

While Line quickly equipped itself to welcome and satisfy a growing number of Western tourists, Jūrmala lagged behind. The Russians are now subject to stringent visa legislation and its beaches have not yet attracted a significant number of Europeans, leaving the tourism sector struggling with a complicated period.

However, in recent years, Jūrmala has started to recover. Many Russian celebrities, successful businessmen and others have bought houses near the beach, and many festivals and other activities have brought more and more people to the city every summer. At the moment, Jūrmala has almost reached the popularity it experienced in the days of the Soviet Union.

  • Kemeri National Park - Ķemeri is the third largest national park in Latvia and is popular for its vast moors, marsh lakes, wooden walkways, lookout towers, bird watching, moss, blueberries ...
  • Liepāja is Ventspils - If you prefer a less crowded (and whiter and softer) sandy beach, these two towns in western Latvia are the ideal choice. They have a lovely city center with historic buildings and have some parks by the sea.
